Mediation can focus on arrangements for children, arrangements for finance and property or both.
You do not need to be married or in a civil partnership to access family mediation
How do I begin? The first step is to get some information about mediation. You can do that by following the links in the 'Helpful Information' section below. The next step is to arrange a 'Mediation Assessment and Information Session' (MIAM) with a mediator. What happens at the MIAM?1. You will share some information about your situation |
Do I have to go to the MIAM?Before you can apply to court for child arrangements or for a financial order they will expect both people, or at least the person applying to the court, to have attended a MIAM to consider mediation. Courts want couples to do everything they can to resolve their disputes without the need for their intervention. If, after the MIAM, or at any point after or during mediation, you still wish to apply to the court, the mediator will sign the relevant court forms in order to make your application/s. |
What happens next?If both participants have attended a MIAM and agreed to mediation, the mediation session/s can begin. Where does it take place? What happens once mediation is finished? |
Are there charges?
The mediator will charge a fee for the MIAM. They will also talk about their charges for mediation sessions and documents
Our fees can be found here.
If you have children, they will talk to you about the government mediation voucher scheme
which provides £500 towards the mediation costs for making arrangements
for children.
