Mediation can focus on arrangements for your children, finance and property or both.
How do I begin? The first step is to get some information about mediation. You can do that by following the links in the 'Helpful Information' section below.
The next step is to arrange a 'Mediation Assessment and Information Session' (MIAM) with a mediator. What happens at the MIAM?
|
Do I have to go to the MIAM?Before you can apply to the family court for a divorce or child arrangements
They will expect the person applying to have attended a MIAM to consider mediation. Courts want couples to do everything they can to resolve their disputes without the need for their intervention. This means they would hope that both participants will engage with Mediation (unless there are reasons for exemption). After the MIAM, if you still wish to go to apply to the court, the mediator will sign the relevant court forms to say the court applicant has attended. |
What happens next?If both participants have attended a MIAM and agreed to mediation, the mediation session/s can begin. Depending on the issues there may be more than 1 mediation meeting. Each session will be for 90 minutes.
Where does it take place? We offer mediation at our meeting room in Luton, Bedfordshire or we can mediate online. What happens once mediation is finished? The mediator will provide the relevant mediation documents to you both. |
Are there charges?
The mediator will charge a fee for the MIAM and they will talk to you about
Legal aid and, if you have children, the government mediation voucher scheme
which provides £500 towards the mediation costs for making arrangements
for children. They will also talk about their charges. Our fees can be found fees here.
